Psalm 103:12 says that “as far as the east is from the west so far has He (God) removed our transgressions from us”. In theory the east and the west should be continually moving away from each other. Meaning that once God has forgiven us we should never see or hear of that transgression again. Unfortunately the influence of the world doesn’t always allow this to be true.

In a pure state, the state of God’s grace, the east can keep moving away from the west as on a straight line. But, the world has great influence. It has such a thing called gravity. As the east moves away it is constantly being pulled in by the world until a point when the east once more meets the west. Thus making a complete circle. If it were not for the world’s influence the two points would keep moving apart never to meet again. Under the world’s influence, the two will keep meeting up with each other. God’s laws are pure and true. But the world works hard to bend and influence them in many ways.

People make mistakes. Lord knows I have made my share. God has forgiven me and I thank Him every day for that. But from time to time people remind me of those past mistakes. This is the influence of the world. Many times people bring up the past in order to keep others in a certain mold. Just as the world holds things in its orbit, people use the past to hold others down when they are in the process of breaking free.

What we must remember is that God looks to the future not the past. His law is that the east and the west are not to meet. To Him the past is the past. When things are brought up that are designed to remind us of our past, we must remember that this is the influence of the world trying hard to bring us back around in its orbit. How we respond to this influence is up to us. We can either circle around or we can keep our eyes looking forward to the future and the freedom that comes with it. We can keep looking toward the future that God has provided now that the past is behind us.

When a rocket leaves the earth it must first hit a speed called its “break away speed”. At this speed the earth’s influence will not bring that rocket back into its orbit. How about you? Have you reached your “break away” speed yet?
